Azkals gets death threats from Thai fans

By Olmin Leyba, The Philippine Star

BANGKOK – The Philippine Azkals management had to make extra arrangement with Thai organizers, the Philippine embassy and some security coordinators to address some "security concerns" that could come the PH team's way in its crucial Suzuki Cup semifinal match against Thailand tonight.

“There are players who have been receiving death threats or threats of being harmed on social media,” team manager Dan Palami said.

“Normally we don’t take it seriously but with what has been happening in past matches where some fans are taking it to the next level, I think it’s better to be on the safe side than on the sorry side,” he added.

Some of the Pinoy booters got the ire of Thai fans after Saturday’s first leg in Manila, which resulted to a 0-0 draw. Defender Amani Aguinaldo #12, for one, became the “most hated man” for his skirmish with striker Adisak Kraisom #9 that led to the red card for the latter and eventual suspension in today’s second leg.

Extra security measures included barring players from going out of the hotel and tapping added security escorts in team functions. “From the management side, we just want to make sure that all our players are protected,” said Palami.

Sino ba ang lalaking ganon..my goosh! tindi niya...Hahahahaha

Tricia Santos Suffering From Anorexia

Ayun sa mga balita, "she is suffering in Anorexia."

I liked this page not because i hate Myrtle Gail Sarrosa.

Please.... Gusto niyang magpasikat. Sige! Let's make her famous. Hahaha

FILTHY HYPOCRITES in Davao

By: Karlos Manlupid via Facebook

As I was shooting in Davao City's San Pedro Cathedral during the observance of Good Friday, I noticed a Tagalog speaking man instructing this security guard to throw out a half-naked man who is silently kneeling and praying inside the church, saying that the churches in Manila prohibit persons with mental disabilities and vagrants to enter its premises. The security guard then assaulted the poor man without any warning poking him in the ribs several times using a "ratan" truncheon...I immediately took several burst shots of the detestable incident. Suddenly, an old man with a Bible in his hand tapped me on my shoulder and told me that it is improper to take photos of the incident and that it is also improper to take photos inside their heavenly church. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??? Tama si Dong Abay. Banal na aso, santong kabayo. (Copyright: Karlos Manlupig) NOTE: I opted to post this blurry picture to preserve the identity of the victim.

Sa sobrang liit nang kanilang mga mata.

Oo nga! Common sense please. Ang amin, ay amin...! Lumayas na kayo sa bansa namin. Salot kayo. Puro fake products pinapasok nyo sa Pilipinas!!!

Pentagon Papers Being Released 40 Years Later

Four decades after The New York Times published the Pentagon Papers, supporters of Army Pfc. Bradley Manning are drawing parallels between the motives that drove Daniel Ellsberg to disclose the Pentagon Papers and Manning’s alleged handover of secret government documents to the website WikiLeaks, which released them in tandem with several newspapers.

Moreover, the Pentagon Papers, made public 40 years ago today, were more highly classified than any of the secret materials published by WikiLeaks, according to the Bradley Manning Support Network. President Obama has said that “Ellsberg’s material was classified on a different basis” than were the WikiLeaks disclosures. “That’s true,” Mr. Ellsberg says. “Mine were top secret.”

After the Pentagon Papers leaks, which established a record of government intent to mislead the American public about US involvement in Southeast Asia, Ellsberg was charged with 12 federal felony counts and faced a possible 115 years in prison. All charges against Ellsberg were eventually dismissed by the trial judge on the grounds of what the judge called “the totality” of governmental conduct that "offends a sense of justice.”

WikiLeaks 101: Five questions about who did what and when

Private First Class Manning could face the death penalty for leaking US diplomatic cables and US military video and field intelligence reports, though the US military has said it will not request the death penalty.

With the release of the Pentagon papers on Monday, the Department of Defense said it has no security concerns about their becoming public in their entirety.

Ellsberg used the occasion to lambast the government, saying in a statement that it has done little to improve its “treatment of whistle-blowers.” Instead, he said, "we’re seeing an unprecedented campaign to crack down on public servants who reveal information that Congress and American citizens have a right to know.”

In April, Manning was transferred to the US military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., after repeated criticism about his treatment at the Quantico Marine Corps base in Virginia. He has been held in US military custody since May 26, 2010.

“If Bradley Manning did what he’s accused of, then he’s a hero of mine,” the Ellsberg statement said. The government continues to persecute Manning, much as it did Ellsberg in the 1970s, he said. “I wish I could say that our government has improved its treatment of whistle-glowers in the 40 years since the Pentagon Papers.”

Manning’s treatment amounts to governmental misconduct “that offends a sense of justice,” Ellsberg added, borrowing words from the judge who presided over his own trial.

The Pentagon says the leaked WikiLeaks documents allegedly provided by Manning have harmed the US military. “We deplore WikiLeaks for inducing individuals to break the law, leak classified documents, and then cavalierly share that secret information with the world, including our enemies,” Defense Department press secretary Geoff Morrell said last year. “We know terrorist organizations have been mining the leaked Afghan documents for information to use against us,” he added. “By disclosing such sensitive information, WikiLeaks continues to put at risk the lives of our troops, their coalition partners, and those Iraqis and Afghans working with us.”

Jeff Paterson, a steering committee member of the Bradley Manning Support Group, pushed back against the characterization that Manning had aided America’s enemies, noting that the Pentagon Papers helped to build public pressure to end the Vietnam War, just as “Wikileaks revelations are helping to catalyze democratic movements across the Middle East.”

“History has vindicated Daniel Ellsberg,” he said, “and history will vindicate Bradley Manning. Both men are American heroes.”

The Bradley Manning Support Network is "dedicated to securing due process and a public trial for PFC Manning," according to the group's spokesman. So far, 4,300 people have donated $333,000 to Manning's legal fees and network "public education" efforts.

Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney & GOP Hopefuls Assail Obama In New Hampshire Debate

www.huffingtonpost.com

Republican White House hopefuls condemned President Barack Obama's handling of the economy from the opening moments of their first major debate of the campaign season Monday night, and pledged emphatically to repeal his historic year-old health care overhaul.

"When 14 million Americans are out of work we need a new president to end the Obama Depression," declared former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the first among seven contenders on stage to criticize the president's economic policies.

Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, invited as an unannounced contender for the 2012 nomination, upstaged her rivals for a moment, using a nationwide television audience to announce she had filed papers earlier in the day to run – a disclosure in keeping with a feisty style she has employed in a bid to become a favorite of tea party voters.

Obama was hundreds of miles away on a day in which he blended a pledge to help companies create jobs in North Carolina with a series of campaign fundraisers in Florida. He won the two states in 2008, and both figure to be battlegrounds in 2012.

The New Hampshire event unfolded more than six months before the state hosts the first primary of the 2012 campaign, and the Republicans who shared a stage were plainly more interested in criticizing Obama than one another.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who first sought the nomination in 2008, was the nominal front-runner as the curtain rose on the debate. But the public opinion polls that made him so are notoriously unreliable at this point in the campaign, when relatively few voters have begun to familiarize themselves with their choices.

Already, this race has had its share of surprises.

Several likely candidates decided not to run – Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels among them – and at least one who ruled out a race is reconsidering. Texas Gov. Rick Perry has said he will decide after the state Legislature completes its current session, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's plans are still unknown.

Gingrich, quick off the mark in attacking Obama, suffered the mass exodus of the entire top echelon of his campaign last week, an unprecedented event that left his chances of winning the nomination in tatters.

All seven flashed their anti-abortion credentials, and were largely unified in opposition to same-sex marriage, which is legal in New Hampshire.

Several praised a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as between one man and one woman, a position popular among conservative voters. Bachmann said she supported that, but she added that states have the right to write their own laws and said that if elected president, she would not step into state politics – a nod to tea partyers who cherish the Constitution's 10th Amendment.

Obama's rivals found little if anything to like in what the president has done since taking office in the midst of the worst economic recession since the Great Depression.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum accused Obama of pursuing "oppressive policies" that have shackled the economy.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty labeled Obama a "declinist" who views America "as one of equals around the world," rather than a special nation.

"If Brazil can have 5 percent growth, if China can have 5 percent growth, then America can have 5 percent growth," he added, shrugging off criticism that his own economic projections were impossibly rosy.

Businessman Herman Cain, a political novice, called for eliminating the capital gains tax as a way to stimulate job creation.

Romney stressed his experience as a businessman over 25 years as evidence that he can lead the nation out of a lingering recession.

Said Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, the seventh contender on the stage: "As long as we are running a program that deliberately weakens our currency, our jobs will go overseas. And that's what's happening."

As front-runner of a sort, Romney could well have expected criticism from his rivals.

But Pawlenty, a few feet away on the debate stage, at first sidestepped a chance to repeat his recent criticism of Romney in connection with the Massachusetts health care law that Romney signed as governor. It includes a requirement for residents to purchase coverage, a forerunner of the "individual mandate" that conservatives loath in the new federal law.

"My using `Obamneycare' was a reflection of the president's comments," Pawlenty said, referring to a word he coined in a Sunday interview.

Bachmann – newest to the race – drew one of the loudest rounds of applause Monday night from a partisan debate audience when she predicted that Obama would not win re-election. He is "a one-term president," she declared.

Instead, the most conservative presidential field in memory all but said what Ronald Reagan once preached – that government was the problem.

Romney said the auto bailout was a mistake, and said more generally, "Instead of thinking in the federal budget what should we cut, we should ask ourselves the opposite question, `What should we keep?'"

Santorum criticized the financial bailout that Presidents George W. Bush and Obama backed, and Bachmann said she had worked in closed-door meetings in Congress to defeat the legislation when it was originally passed.

Pawlenty said politicians had caused the housing price bubble that contributed to the recession, and Paul blamed the recession on the Federal Reserve.

"As long as we do what we're doing in Washington it's going to last another 10 years," Paul said. "What we're doing now is absolutely wrong," he said of federal programs meant to support the housing industry.

Even when they differed, the White House hopefuls did so in muted terms.

Santorum said he wholeheartedly supported Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan's proposal to turn Medicare into a program in which the government subsidizes beneficiaries who would seek coverage from private insurance companies. Under the current system, the government pays doctors and other health care providers directly.

Pawlenty said he would have a plan of his own that shared some features with Ryan's but would differ on other points.

The program's finances are perilous, and Republican calls for fundamental change are at the heart of a roiling debate in Congress that is expected to extend into the 2012 campaign for the White House and both houses of Congress.

Cain bluntly told one questioner he was unlikely ever to receive in benefits from the money he has paid in through payroll taxes during his working life.

Gingrich, who was attacked by fellow conservatives when he criticized Ryan's proposal for being mandatory, said, "When you're dealing with something as big as Medicare ... you better slow down. ... If you can't convince the American people it's a good idea, maybe it's not a good idea."

Gingrich, Bachmann, Romney and Pawlenty all pledged to seek repeal of the health care law that Obama won from Congress earlier in his term. The others on stage hold the same position.

Romney and Paul both said the United States should withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan, but disagreed on a timetable.

Romney said that generals in Afghanistan should guide the pullout schedule of American troops based on conditions on the ground. He said the troops should come home as soon as possible under those conditions. Paul said the president must tell generals what to do. He said if he were president he would begin withdrawing troops almost immediately. He said the United States has no purpose fighting a war in Afghanistan.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman did not participate in the event. He is expected to announce his candidacy within a few weeks.

Magnitude 6.5 earthquake rattles Eureka in Northern California

The temblor snaps power lines, shatters windows and is felt over a wide area, but no major injuries are reported. 'It was a monstrous one,' a merchant says.
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake rocked the Northern California city of Eureka on Saturday, snapping power lines, toppling chimneys, knocking down traffic signals, shattering windows and prompting the evacuation of at least one apartment building.

There were no reports of major injuries, but the temblor, which struck at 4:27 p.m. about 33 miles southwest of the coastal city of 26,000, was powerful enough to send people running into the streets, some fearing a tsunami.

Centered offshore about 13 miles deep, the quake was felt as far north as central Oregon, as far south as Santa Cruz and as far east as Reno, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

"It was a monstrous one," said Phil Burns, owner of Mity Nice Bakery Cafe Restaurant in Eureka, which is about 80 miles south of the Oregon border. "Usually, they're sharp, but this one was very wiggly. It was rolling in all directions."

In the south Eureka fishing village of King Salmon, the 10 seconds of shaking broke power lines and knocked out electricity throughout the isolated seaside community of about 750 people.

When it stopped, people gathered in the street. Some were visibly distraught. Shouts of "You all right?" were heard. Then car engines began revving up as residents raced to the only access road to the closest higher ground, the 150-foot-high Bell Hill, in case of a tsunami, said William Bowman, a resident. None materialized, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Residents of Northern California coastal communities have reason to worry about tsunamis. In 1964, a magnitude 9.2 earthquake off the Alaskan coast sent a catastrophic tsunami to Crescent City, north of Eureka, killing 11 people.

On Saturday, 25,000 customers lost power, according to Pacific Gas & Electric Co. Water and gas lines were also disrupted.

Frayed nerves were evident throughout the Humboldt County region as dusk fell. Rooms at Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata, 15 miles north of Eureka, were in the dark, and patients in robes were sitting in the hallway. Generators provided only enough power to keep vital machinery working, said nursing supervisor Annie Conkler.

"Everyone's shaken, but fine," she said, adding that there were no patients with quake-related injuries coming into the emergency room.

At Myrtle Avenue Pet Center on Hubbard Lane in Eureka, owner Melanie Noe spent the evening picking up shampoo bottles and shattered dog bowls. The only other casualties were the cats' nerves, she said.

On the other side of town, lamps and dishes crashed down at Antiques and Goodies, causing a couple to run out of the store, while two women took cover under a table. "We've been through a lot of earthquakes, but I can't recall there ever being any this bad," said store owner Sandra Hall.

To the south, floodlights fell at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds, and windows shattered in Ferndale. Farther south, in Redway, shoppers abandoned their carts in a grocery store and raced to their cars.

State officials said authorities in the county have not asked for additional assistance from Sacramento.

"It looks like they will be able to handle it on their own," said Kelly Huston, a spokesman for the California Emergency Management Agency. "Our big concern now is aftershocks."

At least 10 aftershocks were reported in the hours after the temblor, the strongest of them registering 4.2.

Richard Allen, a UC Berkeley seismologist, said the area where the earthquake occurred was in the Mendocino Triple Junction, where three tectonic plates collide: the Pacific, North American and Juan de Fuca. It is one of the most seismically active parts of the San Andreas fault system that runs through the state.

"Although 6.5 is a large event, it is not uncommon there by any means," said Richard Buckmaster, a U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist.

The last major quakes in the offshore region, Buckmaster said, were magnitude 7.2 and 6.6 temblors in June 2005.

Justine Henin of Belgium reaches wide for a forehand against Nadia Petrova of Russia

The procession of successful comebacks at the Brisbane International has continued on Pat Rafter Arena with former world number one Justine Henin ousting second seed Nadia Petrova in straight sets this afternoon.

In her first professional outing since her shock retirement in May 2008 the seven-times grand slam champion – a wildcard in the field at the Queensland Tennis Centre – defeated the 20th-ranked Russian 7-5 7-5.

The entire women’s field had waited with a mixture of nervous anticipation and dread as the singles draw was made on Saturday with no one safe as Henin lurked as a floater in the 32-strong main draw.

The unlucky was ultimately the tournament’s second-highest ranked entrant, Petrova, and any fear she may have felt at the prospect of facing the rejuvenated Belgian was well justified.

In a close-fought encounter with the strongly-built Russian, Henin broke her opponent at 5-5 in the first and second sets and refused to surrender those advantages in clinically converting on both occasions.

She now faces Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan in the second round after her three-set defeat of Australia’s Casey Dellacqua earlier today.
